The root of consoles as we know them started with the Magnavox Odyssey which was released in 1972. It’s known as the father of video games since so many consoles came forth from it. As technology became more innovative, new systems evolved with it. Especially Nintendo.
Today we have so many consoles and handhelds to choose from that we can thank the rapid growth of technology as well as the many developers for these options. Due to this growth, we have three huge competitors which are Nintendo, Playstation, and Xbox. Most of these are topics for another day as they are constantly changing. For now, we’re just going to focus on the history timeline of mostly Nintendo with a highlighted touch of others.
Nintendo Systems of the 80s

The consoles released in the 80s are considered nostalgia for most of us gamers 30 or older. We’ll begin with the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) as it was released in 1985 from Japan. This was established with many of the classic games such as Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Metroid, and many others. Then Nintendo released the Gameboy in 1989, but it was a very popular handheld that everyone had to have. From these, Nintendo was laying out the ground work for greatness and many amazing memories to be made worldwide. It was the pinnacle of gaming for many generations and what holds a special place in my heart.
Systems of the 90s
The first system of the 90s was the Super Nintendo System which was released in 1990. All the classics came along with it including Mario Kart and even Donkey Kong was reestablished with this system. The Super Nintendo improved its graphics as well as released the first left and right “shoulder” buttons on the controllers. This system went crazy popular and millions were sold worldwide. This is the system I remember playing the most as a child along with the NES.
A new system was released in 1995 which would become a competitor in a way for Nintendo and that was the Sony Playstation. This added a new spin to the market with a CD Rom capability. This console introduced me to Spyro, Crash Bandicoot and of course Need for Speed. In 1996, Nintendo released what is known as the N64 with a unique controller style and once again improved the graphics. The classics Super Mario, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and Star Fox was a huge hit with this system.
Systems of the 2000s

In the 2000s, the market blew up with more systems starting with the new Playstation and escalated with a new competitor known as the Microsoft Xbox releasing in 2001. Nintendo also continued with the GameCube in 2001 which added another unique controller style to the mix. In 2006, Nintendo then released the Wii which lead to incredible things outside of Super Mario such as Guitar Hero. It came with a game called Wii Sports which was a blast for parties or sleep overs.

Finally, we wrap up the 2000s so far with the Nintendo Switch which was released in 2017, the switch lite in 2019, and then the Oled in 2021. The new Switch 2 model was released Summer 2025 which is even more incredible. This console has many opportunities that will be unlocked as time progresses. But the anticipation of this new and improved console had many gamers waiting in suspense. Will any other future console live up to the hype or will it disappoint? We will all know soon enough.
